How do Roblox Ads work?
There are two families. The first is the one you buy for your own game: a sponsored tile, shown on the Home page and in search, bought through Ads Manager. You set a budget and Roblox's auto-bidding decides what to bid for each slot. The second family runs inside other people's games as rewarded videos, billboards and portals, and the games that show them earn money from it.
Both families have one thing in common. Every viewer is already on Roblox, which matters more than any difference between the formats.
What are sponsored experiences on Roblox?
They're the sponsored tiles in the Home page's Sponsored row. People still call them sponsored experiences, while Roblox's docs now talk about sponsored ads and sponsoring a game. The tile is your game's thumbnail. You can load several thumbnails into one campaign and Roblox rotates them evenly, so you can see which one gets clicked.
This is the format a developer buys for their own game, and it's what Ads Manager sells. The setup is walked through in Roblox Ads Manager explained, and what you end up paying is in how much Roblox Ads cost.
How do search ads on Roblox work?
They come with the same campaign. Roblox's current Ads Manager docs say every campaign is shown automatically on both the Home page and in search results, and clicks are counted from both places.
Older guides describe picking keywords for search ads. The current docs don't mention keywords at all, and Roblox's old search ads page now sends you to Ads Manager. If a tutorial tells you to choose keywords, it's out of date. Search on Roblox still has its own logic, which is covered in how Roblox discovery works.
What are Roblox rewarded video ads?
A full-screen video a player chooses to watch in exchange for an in-game item. The game hosting it earns from each view. Roblox's rewarded video rules are strict about how it's done:
- The player has to opt in, usually with a button. A game can't force the video on someone to let them keep playing.
- The reward is a fixed item, decided in advance and handed over as soon as the video ends. Random rewards aren't allowed.
- Roblox only shows rewarded video to older users, and games can't use rewards to get younger users to watch ads.
- The game hosting it needs a verified owner and a public game, and has to pass Roblox's maturity questionnaire and reach a minimum monthly audience.
The age rules behind that third point are in Roblox's own Advertising Standards.
What are Roblox billboards and portal ads?
Roblox calls them immersive ads: ad units that a game places in its world. There are three kinds.
- Video billboards. A screen in the game that plays a video ad, either when a player clicks it or on its own.
- Image billboards. A still image placed in the world. Players can't click it.
- Portals. An image with a door that teleports players straight into the advertised game.
Different players see different ads on the same unit, and players who can't be shown ads see a fallback logo instead. Portals are the in-game format that actually sends players to a game, and Roblox's standards ban rewards for walking through one and portals that mislead people about where they lead.
Who buys the in-game formats?
Roblox's creator docs explain rewarded video, billboards and portals from the side of the game that hosts them. They don't explain how an advertiser buys space in them. Brand deals a game sets up itself are a separate thing again: Roblox calls them ad integrations, and they have to be registered, reviewed and labelled before players see them.
| Format | Where it shows | What the player does |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsored tile | Home page | Clicks to join |
| Search placement | Search results | Clicks to join |
| Rewarded video | Inside other games | Watches for a reward |
| Billboard | Inside other games | Sees a video or image |
| Portal | Inside other games | Walks through to the game |
Which Roblox ad format gets the most players?
None of them reaches anyone who isn't already on Roblox, so the better question is where else your players are. A lot of them are watching Roblox videos on TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. A clipping campaign puts your game there, from many creators at once, and the clips stay up after the budget is spent.
Fish It shows that it works even for a huge game. It already had 4.5B+ Roblox visits, and it still ran a clipping campaign: 1,000+ creator clips that took it to millions of viewers and new players. The comparison with Roblox's own ads, for new games and big ones, is in Are Roblox Ads worth it?.
A tile is one click from a join, and a clip is a step further away. We close that gap: hooks and captions written around what your players search for, creators whose followers already are those players, and enough clips that people see your game a third and fourth time from different creators. That's when they try it. We test formats until one spreads and run the rest. You tell us the goal. Book a call.
BloxClips generated more than 1,000 submitted clips and videos, expanding Fish It's reach to millions of viewers and new Roblox players.
